The subject of interpretation is just like cross-cultural communication. The effectiveness of interpretation depends on the interpreter’s knowledge of language and understanding of thinking activities in these two languages. Language is closely connected to the ways of thinking, so they are interdependent. Due to the differences in history, geography and culture, people of different language backgrounds have totally different expressions when they are describing the same thing in their own languages. This thesis focuses on how the thought-patterns influence the interpretation and how to deal with it. The aim of the study is to make the interpretation easily understood by native speakers. In this way, the interpretation will be better understood by the listeners. The ideas of the speaker are expressed more clearly to help the listeners to better understand the ideas. On the contrary, if the interpretation is obscure or inappropriate, it will be very hard for the listeners to catch the information correctly. This thesis, through analyzing the differences in thinking patterns between Chinese and English, attempts to analyze how these differences influence the Chinese to English interpretation and how to solve these problems that have occurred. Based on the Interpretive Theory, this thesis takes two speeches given by China’s former Prime Minister Wen Jiabao in Davos Economic Forum as examples, of which some sentences will be analyzed. In the simultaneous interpretation of the speeches, the differences in thinking patterns can be seen. After classifying these differences, measures for dealing with them will be brought out.
