With ever-increasing intercultural communication as a matter of fact,we cannot close our eyes to the various forms of such communication.More and more developed internet has made online communication possible, including online interpreting services. The interpretive theory believes that interpreting is not a matter of inter-linguistic decoding and encoding, but of conveying ideas to achieve effective communication. The triangular model of the interpretive theory believes that there are three stages in the interpreting process: comprehension, deverbalization, and reformulation. The present study is a report on the author’s interpreting practice for an online lecture on the theme of “English Language in Our Day-to-Day Professional Life”,and the transcribed text of this interpreting recording is taken as the corpus. This report takes the interpretive theory as the theoretical framework and analyzes the successful and unsuccessful examples by applying the triangle model of the interpretive theory. Then, the author finds out the main problems that emerged in this interpreting practice were misinterpreting, information loss, logical confusion, and europeanization.Besides, some of her interpretations achieved effective communication by flexibly adopting interpreting skills like free interpreting, reorganization, addition, and omission.Through summary and reflection, she finds out factors affecting the quality of online interpreting, including internal factors such as the author’s bilingual competence, preparation before the task and psychological quality, and external factors like the speaker’s accent and equipment. After analyzing and reflecting, the author comes up with corresponding coping strategies to deal with these factors, including making good preparation before the task, improving the interpreter’s bilingual competence and psychological quality, getting familiar with the speaker’s accent in advance, and checking the equipment of both sides several times before the interpreting task begin. This report is based on the author’s reflection and summary of her interpreting practice and provides a direction for her future interpreting study and practice. The author also hopes this report will provide certain references for other interpreting learners.
