Mental adaptation is essential effects of mental health to high school students. Long-term or serious maladjustment arouses disadvantage to physical and mental health development, and affects the academic standard. The purpose of the study was to inquire into the effect of group counseling on mental adaptation of the freshmen of senior high school. The research is based on group dynamics theory, social learning theory and so on.8 freshmen of senior high school who were screened out through the questionnaire accepted the group counseling. The 8 students were arranged to attend six sessions (total 8 hours) of group counseling. To explore the changes of members before and after the group counseling, we use quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. It includes the analysis of every subject’s scores in the APAS. The observation sheets, reflections of leaders and members were used as the proof and supplements of the research results. Three conclusions were drawn from the study:(1)Self-designed group counseling had a positive effect on the adaptation to the body and sports competitions of the freshmen of senior high school (p<0.01);(2)The analysis of qualitative effects of cognitive-behavioral group counseling showed positive effects. In addition, the group counseling could improve the interpersonal skills of the freshmen of senior high school;(3) Group counseling has some effects on improving the mental adaptation of high school students and provides reference for school mental health education or counseling.
