China is a country with vast territory and abundant resources. There are many different ethnic groups, and each ethnic group lives in different provinces or cities. Different province has different culture, customs and dialects. Therefore we should integrate foreign students with their actual studying situation when we investigate foreign students’ cross-cultural adaptation in China. According to the literature, many researches from home and overseas are related to the cross-cultural adaptation of foreign students who learn Chinese, but little study targeted at Vietnamese students, let alone research into the Vietnamese students’ cross-cultural adaptation in Kunming.According to the above situation, this thesis, based on Oberg, Adler and J·Berry’s theory, uses the questionnaire survey in the study of the cross-cultural adaptation and Chinese learning of 98 Vietnamese students in Kunming. By using SPSS statistical software(21.0) of Percentage, Descriptive analysis, Correlation analysis, Multiple Linear Regression and One-Way Anova, this study analyzes and discusses four factors which impact on Vietnamese students’ cross-cultural adaptation, which are study motivation, the adaptation of life, the psychological adaptation and cross-cultural adaptation factors, and the correlations between these factors and Vietnamese students’ final-term grade of Chinese and self-assessments of Chinese. As a result, Vietnamese students adapt better in the adaptation of life, and it’s a mid to upper level. But the psychological adaptation is a bit weaker; basically it is in a middle level. Vietnamese students’ final-term grades of Chinese have a significant correlation with study motivation, but the correlation strength is weak. Vietnamese students’ self-assessment of Chinese also has a significant correlation with their study motivation, adaptation of life and cross-cultural adaptation, and the correlation strength is also weak. Multiple linear regressions show that the motivation to study in Kunming is the most important predictive factor which influences Vietnamese students’ self-assessment of Chinese and final-term grades of Chinese. In addition, this thesis also discusses the similarities and differences of personal factors among the four factors of cross-cultural adaptation. And the thesis gets a conclusion that gender does not indicate significant differences in four factors. There are significant differences between different age groups in the study motivation factor and the adaptation of life factor. There is no significant difference in motivation factor, the adaptation of life factor, the psychological adaptation factor and the cross-cultural adaptation factor between the different grades. Significant differences are found in motivation to study based on how long they study in Kunming. This survey then gives some suggestions and corresponding measures to Vietnamese students concerning their cross-cultural adaptation problems so as to help them create a better environment to adapt to the life and the learning condition at Kunming. The research hopefully can help to promote the effective management for the Vietnamese students, to improve their intercultural adaptation ability, at the same time to enhance their understanding of Chinese culture and self-identification.
