| On February141950, China and the Soviet Union signed the Sino-Soviet Treaty ofFriendship, Alliance and Mutual Assistance. The Sino-Soviet alliance was the mostimportant symbol of the new China’s “lean to one side†diplomatic strategy, and itwas the only China’s alliance practice with essential meaning since modern times. However, it was a short-lived alliance, and the time that it functioned as it should bewas just about ten years. As the Sino-Soviet debate came along and the fire exchangeshappened in March1969, it actually became dis-functional, even though it still existed. There are many factors that contributed to the formation and the split of theSino-Soviet alliance, such as ideology, geopolitical closeness, assistance andpermeation, and among them, the northeast problem of China was the one of greatimportance. After the end of World War Two, the common strategic interests incontrolling the northeast between the Communist Party of China and the Soviet Unionpaid the foundation to the Sino-Soviet alliance; meanwhile, the Sino-Sovietnegotiation of the northeast problem of China and the reclamation of China’slegitimate rights towards it also planted the seed of the Sino-Soviet split, which by themeans of distrust, historical grudges and injury to national pride plays a negative rolein the Sino-Soviet split. |
