The markets of logistics in developed countries have evolved into the stage of the stable development since they were formed nearly half century ago. The complete statistic data in developed countries makes it possible for researchers to measure the contribution of the markets to enhancing the economic efficiency and reducing the logistics costs. However, China has only the basic statistics of Freight Traffic and Freight Ton-kilometers, lack for the systematic statistics on the demand for and supply of logistics service. In the case of Chengdu, the logistics market lags far behind the growth of urban economy. To solve the contradiction, it is needed to study the relationship between supply of and demand for logistics service. Due to the lack of necessary basic data of logistics market, nobody has conducted a quantitative study on supply of and demand for logistics service till now.In this study, the author conducted the sample investigation through interview with the managers of the various companies in Chengdu. Aimed at solving the contradiction of the demand for and supply of logistics service in Chengdu and impel the balance between supply and demand, I discuss in-depth problems in the market development. This thesis analyzed the investigation result in descriptive and econometric ways. In the framework of theories on supply and demand and transaction costs, it also discussed the characteristics of the supply of and demand for logistics service. Based on the analysis, the thesis concludes that the latent demand for logistics service is huge, while its realistic demand is insufficient; In terms of the supply side, the supply is relatively surplus; supply of logistics service exceeds demands in Chengdu, which causes the overall profit rate of the logistics enterprises to drop. The insufficient realistic demand is mainly due to the fact that the proportion of logistics outsourcing of industrial and commercial enterprises is relatively small. Reasons may be as follows: the equipment holding rate of industrial and commercial enterprises is high, the companies have not clearly realized and accurately calculated the logistic costs, and the logistic business agents supply a low-level of services, etc. Some factors also restrict logistics enterprises' development. Those are the lack of logisticstalents, lag of industrial policy, the backward idea of the enterprises, the low-level logistics techniques, and so on. Generally speaking, the potential of Chengdu logistics market is huge, but its growth is still not perfect. Therefore, the industry and commerce enterprises need to renew and strengthen the idea of logistic business, to reduce the logistic cost and enhance the logistic operating efficiency in the form of alliance. At the same time the government must suitably guide and normalize the logistics market. Therefore Chengdu could become the western center of logistics business.
