Xiamen Port and Kaosiung Port are two trunk line container ports. From the late 1990s,as Xiamen port keeping on developing fast, Kaosiung port's development is quite slow. And the two ports' container throughputs become closer and closer. So, the relation between these two ports is making for competition. Plus, Ximan port's competing with Kaosiung port can bring Chinese central government more initiative in the negotiation with Taiwan local government. So, it's needed to do some research on Xiamen port's strategy in it's competition with Kaosiung port.After doing much investigation on the two ports' basic condition, this paper uses SWOT Analysis, Triple Exponential Smoothing Method and Discrete Choice Model, to solve the following three problems : What are Xiamen port's superiority, weakness, opportunity and threat? When will Xiamen port catch Kaosiung? How to achieve this goal? The result of SWOT Analysis shows, comparing with Kaosiung, Xiamen port has lower cost and wider hinterland. But as to the customhouse and trunk line, Xiamen port is inferior to Kaosiung. Xiamen port has good opportunity as the main land developing fast and might get support from the center government, while it facing threats including other port's competition and the probability of policy changing. The result of the forecast shows Xiamen port could catch Kaosiung after about 10 years. Discrete Choice Model shows the efficiency of assemble, the cost of assemble and the cost of transportation are the most important factors which influence the choice of shippers and consignors.Based on the research, it's suggested that Xiamen port should catch Kaosiung by two steps. The first moment is from now on to 2010, Xiamen port should give priority to attract more cargos from the mainland market. To reach this goal, Xiamen port should do marketing, improve transportation and cooperate with shippers and other ports. The second moment is from 2010 to 2015, during this moment, Xiamen should improve it's service, develop the logistics and reduce the price while allied with shippers and consignors, try it's best to get more transferring cargos. Also, Xiamen port should always prepare to adjust it's strategy according to the changing circumstance.
