As a new development concept and a model, sustainable development has beenapproved by many governments. Land is one of the most important and basic resourcesfor sustainable development. Being the carriers of all mankind's activities, land resourcesare the material base that the mankind depends on for existence, and the sustainable landuse is the basic guarantee of the sustainable development strategy that our country willcarry out. So it is significant to develop the population, land resources, society, economy, ecological environment in harmony while realizing the regional sustainable land use forthe sustainable development of the whole regional economics and society. Based onmention above, taking Weihai as an example, the paper analyzes, theoretically andpractically, the sustainable land use by the current and felicitous appraisement method—the ecological footprint.Theoretically, the paper gaved a more comprehensive review and comments about thedomestic and international research on sustainable land use. And elaborated the conceptand basic principles of sustainable development as well as the sustainable land use. Thenit carried on the ecological footprint of the basic concepts, methodology and steps as wellas their advantages and disadvantages after the in-depth analysis on the ecologicalfootprint model. In the course of the study, the dynamic, comprehensive degree of land use andecological footprint of Weihai City were calculated with the use of Excel software at first.Land-use change is in a period of development and the change rate of land use is sharpfrom the results of the calculation of land use dynamic degree land in study area, and theannual rate of change reaches 2.15. The land use is in the development and various typesof land area change dramatically from the results of the calculation of the comprehensivedegree of land use of Weihai. Moreover land-use state is unsustainable after beingcalculated the ecological footprints of Weihai, including 3 cities and a zone in 2004In order to reflect the dynamics of sustainable land use, the ecological footprint ofWeihai and its various urban districts were calculated from 2000 to 2004. The structureand dynamics of land use was analyzed according to the structure of supply and demandas well as the spatiotemporal structure of the ecological footprint of Weihai. The resultshowed that the per ecological footprint of Weihai increased by 57.8% from 1.9895 to3.1395 hm2 in 5 years. While at the same time per supporting capacity reduced by 1.99%,from 0.8338 to 0.8172 hm2 in the study period. Therefore, the ecological deficitincreased progressively year by year, and the land sustainable use is in the absoluteecology pressure. And the evaluation of the land use degree in Weihai supplemented by economycorrelation analysis model about Weihai, such as Ten thousand Yuan GDP ecologicalfootprint, the ecological footprint elasticity coefficient, the ecological footprint diversity, and the development ability of ecological footprint. Although the land use of Weihai isnot at the sustainable development state, it can not pull back the economic growth by theresults of the above calculation now. With the above analysis and estimate, the following measures were proposed in thepaper in response to the questions which existed in the land use in Weihai: (1) To protecteffectively farmland and improve the quality of cultivated land;(2)To extend the area ofwoodland and pasture;(3)To strengthen intensive land use;(4) To update the concept ofeconomic development and transformation the mode of economic growth;(5) Toreinforce land planning and land management, and to promote the sustainable land use;(6) To control the amount of population and run education strongly to promote virtuouscircle of the population system. The main conclusions were drawn briefly, and the deficiencies and the problems to besolved in the study were also proposed in the paper.
