As a new development concept and a model, sustainable development has been approved by many governments.Land is one of the most important and basic resources for sustainable development.Being the carriers of all mankind's activities, land resources are the material base that the mankind depends on for existence, and the sustainable land use is the basic guarantee of the sustainable development strategy that our country will carry out. So it is significant to develop the population, land resources, society, economy, ecological environment in harmony while realizing the regional sustainable land use for the sustainable development of the whole regional economics and society.Based on mention above, taking Changde as an example, the paper analyzes, theoretically and practically, the sustainable land use by the current and felicitous appraisement method—the ecological footprint.Ecological footprint of Changde including 6 counties,2 zones and 1 city from 2003 to 2007 were calculated and analyzed in the paper with the use of ecological footprint model. The structure and dynamics of land use was analyzed according to the structure of supply and demand as well as the spatiotemporal structure of the ecological footprint of Changde. The results showed that the ecological footprint of Changde from 2003 to 2007 was increasing from 2.0516 hm2 to 2.5279 hm2.While at the same time the per supporting capacity had little changed, Ecological deficit of 2003 is 1.4243 hm2, but 1.8780 hm2 in 2007. Absolute value of the ecological deficit increase by degrees on a yearly basis. Sustainable land use of land is in the absolute ecology pressure. Furthermore, thesis computed many indicators such as GDP of EF,flexible coefficient of EF,diversity of EF and development ability that embody the relation between land use and economic development. With sustainable land use evaluation and analysis of Changde City, in view of the current land-use problems, from these areas which including farmland protection, improve the land area of biological production, increased diversification of land-use types, intensive use of land for construction purposes, adjust industry structure, control population growth, correctly guide the consumer trend to propose a solution for alleviatng the ecological pressure on land in Changde City, promoting the sustainable development of land resources of Changde city.
