With the rapid increase of the production of billets, the product quality management of steel billet enterprises also puts forward higher requirements. The identification of billet is one important way of billet quality management. The traditional manual identification has been unable to meet the production requirements of iron and steel enterprises because of low productivity, labor intensity and other shortcomings. In order to meet production requirements of iron and steel enterprises, we must develop a set of automated and effective marking equipment. Although foreign billet marking equipment is qualified for the production requirements of iron and steel enterprises, but its use with high maintenance costs, does not apply to China’s steel enterprises. In this context, it is necessary for the domestic steel producers of the specific situation to develop a low cost billet marking equipment, which is suitable for domestic steel companies.According to the review of related literature and the plant’s environment and design requirements, a detailed analysis and research of working principle and mechanical system components and the overall structure of plasma arc marking machine has been carried out. The device’s overall structural design has been developed. The plasma arc marking equipment is mainly made up of the host of the marking machine, scraping scales mechanism, the upper box and the base of marking equipment. In this paper, a detailed analysis and calculation of writing mechanism has been also carried out. This article uses AutoCAD software to make two-dimensional drawings of plasma arc marking machine and Pro/E software to construct a three-dimensional solid model of the whole device. Finally the finite element analysis of writing mechanism and the framework and the base of marking equipment has been carried out by the finite element analysis software ANSYS. It theoretically proved that writing mechanism and the framework and the base of marking equipment which are the core of the whole device are reasonable and reliable.The plasma arc marking machine designed in this article is entirely in accordance with the actual requirements of the plant. Because of its high efficiency and good controllability, the plasma arc marking machine can well meet the production requirements of iron and steel enterprises, and be very applicable to domestic steel billet market.
