Westerners have paid more attention to the socio-cultural impacts of tourism on destination and issued many papers on this matter after the 1960s'. In the meantime, such a research has been backward for about 30 years in China, compared with western researches in this field. Our researchers haven't focused on it until the early 90s'of the twentieth century, and then more and more researchers have been entering this field step by step. Since modern tourism has recently sprung up in China, the tourist exploitation has been impacting on the society and culture in tourist destination bit by bit, which is the reason why few people focus on such a problem. However, with the rapid development of tourism, the government and scientists have begun to attach more importance to the problem because the socio-cultural problem caused by tourism has become more complex.This paper discusses the background of times and the significance of the researches on the socio-cultural impacts of tourism on destination. By analyzing and summing up the significant internal and external achievements and on the basis of some principal theories and methods of geography of tourism, sociology and cultural anthropology, the author explains the definition of the socio-cultural impacts of tourism on destination, discusses the theory of tourism developing stage, acculturation theory and social exchange theory, and takes the Kanas Lake Scenic Area as the case for analyzing socio-cultural impacts caused by the tourism on the local Tuva residents. What's more, the article puts forward the readjustment policies for socio-cultural impacts of tourism.The whole article falls into four main parts:(1) The summary of the historical achievements. It reviews the achievements of socio-cultural impacts of tourism and prospects the tendency of the research and discusses the significance of the research.(2) Discussion of theory and method. It sums up the principal theories on the socio-cultural impacts of tourism on the basis of geography of tourism, sociology, cultural anthropology and some other relevant theories——the theory of tourism developing stage, acculturation theory and social exchange theory.
