As the disposable incomes and leisure time increases in quantity, more and more urban residents begin choosing to travel in suburbs areas. To accelerate the unitary development of suburbs tourism, the local governments pay more attention to the exploitation of suburbs tourism. This paper takes suburbs areas of Shanghai as a nationwide representative case and puts forward a development pattern and some counterstrategies of Shanghai suburbs tourism in terms of its current development conditions,the tourist market characteristics,the existing problems and the spatial distribution characteristics of attractions.The thesis consists of 7 chapters:The first chapter outlines the study foundation, method, structure of the research and study reviews in this field including the domestic and overseas research on suburban tourism.In the second chapter, several interrelated concepts are defined at first, and then the paper introduces the formation mechanisms and functions of suburbs tourism. Finally, it lists some spatial distribution patterns of some domestic and overseas tourism attractions and it recites six supportive theories on suburbs tourism research.The third chapter elaborates the main basis of the development of Shanghai suburbs tourism and analyses the current situations of it including tourism development conditions, general characteristics of tourist market and existing problems.Chapter four is a very important part. It studies the spatial differentiation regulations and characteristics of Shanghai suburbs attractions on the basis of their categories by means of average distance from city centre and discrete index of attractions. There appears a coming picture of situations and prospects of many types of attractions.The fifth chapter is another core chapter. It concludes former development patterns at first. Then it establishes its own space layout pattern consisting of three points, three axis and four rings according to the characteristics and spatial distribution situations of tourism resources in Shanghai.Chapter six brings out some measures and strategies as possible constructive ideas and helpful references in terms of government instruction, marketing, environmental protection and facilities establishment and so on.Finally the limiting factors and further research of the thesis are discussed briefly.
