The Deep-water Port Development And Regional Economic Development

Pushed by the economic globalization, the industry transshipment becomes more and more popular in the international world in the form of capital and technology. The rapid development of economy and international trade promoted the development of transportation business. Port's position and function in the national economy have been changed from transshipment node to international trade center. Such promotion has proved the realistic meaning for the research of the influence of port's construction on the regional development.This essay, guided by related theories of port economy and regional development, discussed the spatial development policy of Nantong City and the north part of the Yangtze Delta through the analysis of both economy development, spatial structure and especially the Nantong deep-water harbor's construction so that it could be some kind of theoretical help to the realization of strategic objective of regional development of Nantong and its neighboring area.First, begin with theoretical base of the port's influence on regional development; this essay analyzed its type and affect. After the conclusion of analysis of international port development history and port economy development and regional development theories, it focused on the analysis of typical theories' intension about port economy development and regional development.Then, it gave further analysis of economy development and spatial structure on Nantong's regional development background, port's infrastructure and potential development capacity. The port's resources are the biggest strategic advantage of Nantong and its development has become the key point for Nantong's bright future.Next, this essay use systematical SWOT analysis on the development of Nantong deep-water port. It offered Nantong a strategic structure based on the development of deep-water port in the aim of forming a regional development center in the north part of Yangtze Delta. Nantong should view the port development as a leading part and drive engine for the regional development of communication, industry and city of large scale. In the initial period, the most important point should be forming a new development center as Yangkou Port in Nantong; after a certain period, the sticking point should be changed into forming new strategic spatial structure which has two development center, both Yangkou and Nantong, so that owning a newly formed economy center, the north part of Yangtze Delta will develop more rapidly and smoothly.At last, this essay gave detailed policy suggestions of develop port economy and port-front industry to promote regional economy.
