As a brand new developing notion and mode, sustainable development has been accepted by most countries and government. Land is the most important and basic resources in the sustainable development. And land resources are the material basis for people's living as a carrier for human activities of all. Because land sustainable development is the basic guarantee to realize district strategy of sustainable development in our country, it is significantly important for ensuring sustainable development of the whole society that how to promote the harmonious development between population, resources, economy, society and ecological environment to realize sustainable use of land. Based on this point, the "analysis method of ecological footprint", which is a comparatively prevailing method of weighing sustainable development in the world, is used in this paper to analyze and evaluate land sustainable use in Wuhan.The paper has carried out in-depth analysis on ecological footprint model after basic principles of sustainable development as well as the sustainable land use, has introduced ecological footprint of the relevant concept, methodology and steps, and has made detailedly and objective valuation to their advantages and disadvantages.The article analyzes ecological footprint model thoroughly. Firstly, it introduces relative conceptions of ecological footprint. Then calculating method of ecological footprint model and its approaches are analyzed, and some advantages and disadvantages are estimated. At length, the article calculate and analyzes ecological footprint with its model in Wuhan from 1997 to 2005.It is shown that per capita ecological footprint increased 24.13% from 2.283890/cap in 1997 to 2.835018/cap in2005 in 9 years while the per capita ecologically carrying capacity decreased 9.92% from 0.449765/cap in 1997 to 0.405126/cap in 2005 and the ecological footprint deficit increased continually. The article also calculate the ecological footprint per ten thousands yuan GDP, the elasticity coefficient, diversity and development ability of ecological footprint, etc to complement the land use degree of Wuhan. According to the results, though it is in the non-sustainable state currently in Wuhan, the growth speed of economy is not blocked.Through the previous appraisal analysis, some countermeasures and suggestion are put forward as following to the problems in land use in Wuhan: protecting earnestly and improving quality of the farmland; strengthening land consolidation use; coordinating industry structure, calling for circulated economy, promoting using efficiency of resources of industry enterprises; strictly controlling the amount of population and improving the humanquality; changing people's expense custom and establishing economic expensesociety.
