Discussions On The Issues Of Measurement And Analysis Of Poverty

Poverty has been an obstacle to survival and development of human beings from ancient times to the present. Meanwhile the human history is also the history of people combating with poverty. There are poverty problems of different degrees not only in developing countries, but also in developed countries. Though the economy of our country has got great progresses, poverty is also unavoidable.Since China implemented its reform and opening to the outside world, living standard has been changing with each passing day. People on the whole have adequate foods and clothing, and are building a well-off society in an all-round way. But now our reform in all aspects is going through a critical moment. Some conflicts are excitated; some problems presented. The gaps between the poor and the rich are enlarging. The laid-offs and unemployed are serious. Some people are making a hard living and in a poverty situation which fall short of harmonious societies'aim. It is generally acknowledged that the population of the poor is in a great measure in rural China. Along with the process of economic reform, laid-offs and unemployed workers become more and more, urban poverty plays a more and more important and remarkable role. Different from rural poverty, urban poor population is relatively centralized. The gap between rich and poor is bigger and the feeling of deprivation is strong which bring on complicated social problems. So it is very significant to recognize and measure urban poverty.According to the theory of hierarchy in poverty theory, my studies belong to the general theory of poverty which include the connotation and the extension, the recognition of poverty and the measurement indexes. The dissertation utilizes Fujian urban residents'data to develop models for poverty analysis. In this part the dissertation computes poverty lines, several measurement indexes of poverty and in the end poverty decomposition is made. The structure of the dissertation is integrity. There are not only theories but also empirical analysis.The innovation of this dissertation is empirical analysis. Most of empirical analyses in poverty research documents are rural poverty analyses, and the urban poverty analyses are just a few. The type of data in my empirical analyses is different from other scholars'. Though the basic models are the same, concrete calculation methods have my own characteristics. In addition, the dissertation decomposes poverty variation in terms of areas in a province.
