In the rapid development period of manufacturing, especially during Mainland China becomes "Word Factory", the necessary of speediness and flexibility of production, and the order-formed production and the multiformity changing of products, manufacturers are facing the difficult problems that they have never met. Studies show, in the whole course of production, only 5% time is used for processing and manufacturing, surplus is for storing, loading and unloading, and waiting for processing and material handling. In the U.S.A., the proportion of direct labor cost is less than 10% of the total cost of factories, and the expenses paid for storage and material handling account for 40% of the production cost. "Profit" in the production process has nearly been compressed, and obvious benefit enhancement is quite difficult. And great potential existing in the course of material handling and storage remains to be excavated.Material handling and storage are closely related with facility design and factory layout. The facilities design and factory layout can critically influence below situations: utilizing resources rationally; realizing scientific management after facilities are run; producing economic benefits. So facility design and layout of material handling are definited as the third source of the profit.In order to design the factory layout, we analysed the information of product market. We started from the product variety and output, and then analysed the products' composition. We analysed the administrant's strategy and made a production outline. We designed a detailed assembly process and draw its flow chart. We divided out the workshop according to the process and characteristic of every stage; set up the essential functional departments, subsidiary production and service departments according to production needs; chose the facility design method according to production outline and terms of restraining; draw various feasible solutions to the factory layout design; and with the help of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) obtained the optimal solution.
