| Accompanied by the continuous development of economic and trade globalization, the competition between ports became more and more fierce. The level of the port competitiveness is now the weather vane of the development tendency of the economical hinterland where the port is located. So nowadays the operators are most concerned about how to increase the competitiveness of the ports. For this target, not only should the operators refer to the operation mode of the other outstanding ports, they should also summarize the experience and lessons learnt, take the advantage of the strength and overcome the shortcomings based on the port's own development situation. Then the port could establish itself in an impregnable position worldwide. This article refers to the achievements on the competitiveness of the port. After comparing the advantages of the system evaluation methods, the article suggests to evaluate the competitiveness of the port with the Data Envelopment Analysis method. It also tries to use the Factor Analysis model as an auxiliary model of the Data Envelopment Analysis method. So the limitation of the DEA method was compensated with the feature of Factor Analysis method and the DEA method could optimize itself to the maximum. The article applies the theory to the actual situation of one port in China. By evaluating the competitiveness of the port, it provides the scientific foundation for optimizing the resource disposition, improving the efficiency of management and creating more benefits. For the details:Firstly the article summarizes the research achievements and traditional evaluation methods of home and abroad. As a result, it chooses the DEA method as the port competitiveness evaluation model. It analyzes the advantages and the limits of the DEA method. It decides to use Factor Analysis method as an auxiliary method to overcome the limits of DEA. Then the article creates the port competitiveness evaluation index system. Based on this system, the article defines the input/output indices. Using the five year data(2003-2008) of a Chinese port as the evaluation sample, the article does a relatedness analysis to the input/output indices with the Factor Analysis method. It extracts the factor, uses the named factor as the input/output indices of DEA port competitiveness model and sets the score as the default value of the DEA model. At last, the article evaluates the competitiveness of the port with DEA model. Whether the years are efficiency or not is calculated by bringing the processed input/output indices into the DEA evaluation model. For the years which are inefficiency, the article provides directions to improve. It also ranks the investigated years using cross evaluation mechanism. |
