Revolution to the traditional way of manual meter reading technology is of great practical significance. It is a urgent problem to transmit nicely and real time the electric power data to the relevant departments. It is also important to minimize the material resources and manpower. ZigBee technology and GPRS wireless communication network technology are adopted to construct the system of remote wireless automatic reading meter. Thus, it is realizable to collect and transmit the electric power data.Based on ZigBee and GPRS, protocols for physical layer, MAC layer, network layer and application layer are analyzed and the ZigBee mesh network is established upon the 802.15.4 network layer protocol. Schemes of ZigBee or GPRS and factors such as cost, practicality, facility and the developing cycle, JN5139 chip of Jennic is chosen as the data transmitting module of ZigBee network and Siemens MC39i is adopted as the remote transmission module of GPRS.According to the function of different, terminal unit consists of collector, repeater and concentrator. The transceiver modules of the above three parts are all designed through expansion of the peripheral circuits on the JN5139 chip. Thus, the ZigBee mesh network is formed to realize collection, transmission and gathering to the data of the power meter. Concentrator is the accessing gateway to the ZigBee network and is also the core module of the intellective terminal. The 32-bit ARM9 microprocessor is chosen as the processor unit of the system to improve the operating speed and its compatibility. Memory circuit, Ethernet communication circuit and USB interface circuit are also designed specially to improve capacity of dealing with large mount of data and update. A set of data transferring protocol is put forward to achieve remote transmission and docking.Performances of the system is tested, basing on the designed hardware resources, meter data reading protocol and testing software of the functional modules. Results show that, functions such as integrality of the ZigBee network, data collection of the power meter, remote transmission and modification to the parameters of the terminal equipments, answer for the requirements of the design.
