Chinese character is an important way to spread the Chinese culture. As a kind of ideographic writing, Chinese character contains plenty of cultural meanings. However, the teaching of Chinese characters has become one big problem in teaching Chinese as the second language. This essay summarizes the research of teaching Chinese characters to the foreigners and some problems existing in the practical teaching in the recent years, proposes keeping to some certain culture lead-in principles, and fully making use of the characteristics of Chinese characters and its close relationship with culture to improve the efficiency of teaching Chinese characters. Based on the study of teaching Chinese characters to the short-term American learners experienced by the writer, this essay analyzes the features reflected by the study of American learners, and through some attempts to teaching the actual learners, tries to offer the different possible ways to lead-in the cultural elements respectively for the learners at primary stage, intermediate and advanced stage in order to achieve the goal of teaching Chinese characters, also strengthen the interests and efficiency.
