China's tourism industry has been flourishing at full speed in recent years. First-class tourist services are in desperate demand accordingly, including quality translations of tourist publicity materials (TPMs). TPMs, as one important medium, open a window for overseas tourists to seek traveling information, appreciate Chinese culture and enrich their lives as well. However, those already-published translated versions are still far from satisfactory. There is much more to explore, especially in how to enhance rendered texts' acceptability in hope to attract as many tourists as possible.Vermeer's Skopos Theory proposes translation is a purposeful cross-cultural activity rather than a mere linguistic transfer. Translators in translating are supposed to adopt all kinds of flexible methods in line with the guided principles, aiming to attain the translated text's intended function. Under this theoretical guidance, the present study elaborates how to produce ideal translated versions for Yunnan's TPMs. Practical strategies and techniques are recommended as well, with a view to encouraging translators'strong senses of skopos-oriented, reader-oriented and publicity awareness, further improving translation quality and bridging cultural gaps. Meanwhile, they take the responsibility of promoting national culture as well as the development of tourism in Yunnan and China. The thesis focuses on the specific C-E translation of Yunnan's TPMs from the perspective of the skopos theory. It consists of 6 parts, including introduction and conclusion. The first part serves as a general introduction to the study concerning the background, significance, research questions, data collection, methodology and layout as well.Chapter One presents an overview of TPMs and the translation as well as related tourism translation research in China. In Chapter Two, the skopos theory functions as a theoretical framework, explaining its background and development, main principles, and merits etc.Chapter Three is contributed to combining the skopos theory with practice, regarding how to make Yunnan's TPM translated versions more readable and enjoyable to the taste of target readers. Discussions are concerned with the translation skopos, brief, principles for Yunnan's TPMs and improper translation analyses to the guidebook Yunnan English Guide.Chapter Four proposes 6 practical translation techniques employed in dealing with issues as proper names, world heritages, folk cultures and social customs of Yunnan's TPMs.The last part is the conclusion. The author points out the major contributions and limitations of the study, with the hope that more studies will be conducted on this topic.
