To take the"post-crisis"as the backdrop, this thesis formulize a new theoretical model in line with the China's national conditions after reviewing and comparing of the existing theories in terms of the industry competitiveness. Meanwhile, the model is used to make the analysis of the status quo and relevant factors about the industry competitiveness of Shanghai automobile industry. The policies involving the enhancement of the cutting edge are also seen under the uncertain external circumstances in order to propose several suggestions for the sustainable development. The classic industry competitiveness theory consists of the comparative advantage, competitive advantage and the advantage of backwardness. After the analysis of the suitability and limitation in the classic ones, this thesis make it clear that due to the oblivious discrepancy between China's reality and those of the developed countries, the usage of the classic theories to analyze the China's industries without any adjustment would result to the impropriety in some measure, thus the"theoretical localization"is in demand. The application for the China's industry analysis is adjusted and rectified pursuant to the real conditions and resources endowments, forming a analytical model featuring"three ties, four main factors". The internal conditions, external conditions and other related conditions are set as components of three tiers, while the core factor, environment factor, fundamental factor and institutional factor are set as four main ones respective so as to the further explanations of the"typical phenomenon"hidden in the China's industry competitiveness. Distinct from other theories, the institutional factor of industry is inspected individually to be given prominence for the developing counties, China in particular, with the pursuit of the industry competitiveness promotion. With the advent of 1950s, the automobile industry has been gradually becoming the superior industry in Shanghai. After the adoption of reform and opening up policy, Shanghai automobile industry seized the historic opportunity to yield the great development by means of the joint-venture or cooperation with foreign partners, acceleration of the introduction of advanced technologies and the establishment of the automobile industry clusters, which has been the most important sector among Shanghai's six pillar ones. Shanghai automobile industry scored remarkable performance in 2010, whose production, sales volume and market shares are leading the national market. The theoretical model featuring"three ties, four main factors"is employed to analyze the industry competitiveness of Shanghai automobile industry in-depth with fine-grained data and diagrams. Compared with the automobile sectors in other provinces and regions in China, the real strength is fully demonstrated: the analytical index of Shanghai auto sector is at the top level in China, especially in terms of the industry innovation, enterprises competitive forces, product differentiation, relevant and supportive industries (car components manufacturing) and infrastructure, which pervade the strong competitiveness and huge competitive advantage on the market in full swing. Moreover, the gigantic latent demands provide a sustainable development patterns for the future of Shanghai automobile industry. At the beginning of the"Twelfth five-year plan", Shanghai automobile industry is faced with a new historic starting point, accompanied with several challenges: firstly, compared with the status quo of famous transnational enterprises, internationalization process is still at a low level with lack of overall competitiveness; secondly, the absence of the high-end technologies with independent intellectual property rights hampers the creation of core cutting edge; thirdly, the missing of the self-owned brands imposes restriction on the high-end transformation. All in all, the enhancement of the competitiveness of Shanghai automobile industry is the inherent need called for Shanghai's sustainable economic and social development. Therefore, this thesis put forward the policies for the near future as followed: first of all, the strategic objects of industrial development should be identified according to its own comprehensive capacity, and the internationalization process should be speeded up for cover more global markets; moreover, the superiority of industry clusters should be reinforced in the coexisting and competitive market patterns. On one hand, the M&A over the auto enterprises with abundant resources should be come up on the agenda; on the other hand, the alliance with domestic and abroad auto corporations should be planned in the near future; thirdly, the path centering the constantly technological innovation should be resolutely carried out in order to make the breakthrough in some areas and to cultivate the leading competitiveness on the global markets.
