The Silk Road was an international passage with historical significance, and it helped to link up ancient Chinese culture with that of India, Greece and Rome. Many historical relics and places of interest were left over in history on this ancient path, which is the yearning of many tourists today. And the Silk Road has become a famous selected tour route promoted by China. But a unique category of the tourism resources along this route is being neglected, and that is China's ancient pass, such as Yumen Pass, Yanguan Pass, and Jiayu Pass etc, which recorded the historical inheritance and information, containing profound cultural heritage essence. These are abundant resources enjoying unique advantage for the development of tourism industry. However, up to the present, the publicity, protection, exploitation and utilization of these ancient passes are far from enough; the economic benefits, cultural benefits, social benefits of these ancient passes are far from being played out. Therefore, the author, from the perspective of tourism development, provides some thoughts on the development of the ancient pass culture with the hope that the ideas in this thesis will be of some help to the development of the ancient pass culture along the Silk Road.This essay is divided into five parts. The first part mainly puts forward the research subject, defines the scope of the study in view of the research subject and analyses the related study on ancient passes by Chinese and foreign experts and scholars in the past, then proposes the basic ideas and innovations of the present paper. The second part is a brief account of the Silk Road. The author elaborates the cultural significance of the Silk Road and makes clear analysis of the concepts of cultural tourism and tourism culture. In the third part the author describes the formation and development of ancient passes, probes into the cultural manifestation and connotation of ancient passes, as well as the tourism value of ancient passes. The fourth part includes the introductions to the ancient passes along the Silk Road, an objective evaluation of the ancient passes tourism resources along the Silk Road from the qualitative and quantitative aspects. The author discusses the present situation of the tourism development of the ancient passes along the Silk Road and the existent problems in the process of the development. In the fifth part, the author constructs guiding ideology and principles of the exploitation and utilization of the ancient passes along the Silk Road, the fixed position of overall development of ancient passes tourism, and delineates a model of development for the ancient passes tourism along the Silk Road. the thesis is concluded with the concrete measures to develop the ancient pass tourism resouces along the Silk Road.
