Ixeris sonchifolia (Bge.) Hance (Family Composite) is abundantly distributed throughout the northeastern China. It has been used as a folk medicine in invigorating circulation of blood, normalizing menstruation, and eliminating blood stasis to relieve pain in China. The constituents of Ixeris sonchifolia are complicated, including sesquiterpenes, flavonoids, triterpenes etc. It had widely extensive activity in antitumor, antiache, tranquilization.In our investigation of biologically active substances from I. sonchifolia, 18 compounds were isolated with silica gel, sephadex LH-20, HPLC, etc. And 14 of them were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectral methods. The fourteen compounds were named as sonchifolactone E [3, 11β- dihydroxy -1 (10), 3 - guaiadiene-12, 6 - olide -2 - one] (1), sonchifolinin B (2), furancarboxylic acid (3), vanillin (4), protocatechuic aldehyde (5), succinic acid (6), luteolin (7), sonchifolactone A [3 - hydroxy- 1 (10), 3 -guaiadiene - 12, 6 - olide - 2 - one] (8), dehydrovomifoliol (9), loliolide (10), 3 - (4 -hydroxy - 3 - methoxyphenyl) - 1 - propanol (11), syringarenol (12), lirioresinol - A (13), adenosine (14). Among them, compounds 1 and 2 were new compounds; compounds 3 4 5 9 10 11 and 13 were isolated from this plant for the first time.A review on the constituents and biologic activities of Ixeris sonchifolia were provided. And the compounds isolated from Ixeres sonchifolia were elucidated.
