In accordance with the inter-language theory; this paper discusses, by the methods of linguistic contrastive analysis and error analysis, international students?error categories in using common adverbs in the Chinese inter-language system and the causes of such errors. Four error categories have been found and defined as missing, mis-adding, mis-order, and misuse of adverbs from the perspectives of grammar and pragmatics. Emphases are placed on analysis of the error categories of missing ,mis-adding and misuse of the echoing components that are restricted by the semantic meaning and grammatical function of adverbs. A questionnaire survey has been conducted to make quantitative analysis of international students?difficulties, methods and self-assessments in learning Chinese adverbs. The influence of the teacher-student relationship and the social pragmatic environment and the negative effect of mistakes and errors in classroom instruction and textbook compilation on international students?learning Chinese adverbs are also discussed. Based on these discussions, some comments are made on improving the teaching of adverbs in Chinese as a foreign language courses.
