In the practice of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, time adverb is an important grammatical item and it remains a very difficult part for foreign students. Chinese time adverbs are numerous and have a broad scope of usage. They can be divided into many smaller groups, in which scholars' opinions vary greatly. In Chinese language, the expression of time factors relies greatly on time adverbs. It is extremely difficult for foreign students to maser Chinese time adverbs and students often make various kinds of errors in using time adverbs. This thesis makes a careful analysis on the student's errors and tries to offer some practical suggestions for Chinese time adverb teaching.In the thesis, we picked up 18 primary time adverbs from the vocabulary of Chinese proficiency test glossary. We took the language samples of foreign students studying Chinese in Central China Normal University and also selected relevant composition samples from the corpus of Beijing Language and Culture University, then we made analysis on the errors made by the foreign student and categorized the errors into four groups:omission, wrong order, redundancy and misuse. By making analysis on the possible causes to the above error types, we pointed out the main factors influencing Chinese teaching process:complexity of Chinese time adverbs, negative migration of mother language, negative migration of the target language, teaching strategies and the teaching materials. Besides, this paper made analysis on the right order of time adverbs in syntax and their relevant usages based on the present research of Chinese grammar rules, and then discussed the grammatical rules guiding Chinese time adverbs teaching to foreign students.This thesis also probed into the teaching design of time adverbs, offered some effective teaching methods and made suggestions on the compiling of teaching materials.Above all, this thesis made analysis on the errors of time adverbs, based on the language samples of foreign students, with the purpose of serving Chinese time adverb teaching. The final goal of this paper is to offer some practical teaching methods.
