Lao She, famous Chinese writer in modern times, produces abundant literary works in all his life, of which his creativities in the period of Nationwide Anti-Japanese Association of Literature and Art are of high value. At that time, he, elected as the director of general affairs department, was in charge of the association, uniting anti-Japanese literary and art workers in all fields to fight against Japan's aggression, which contributes a lot to the association.Meanwhile, he makes great achievements in that he adopts various literary genres and produces quite a lot works. During the period of the association, there is a distinct shift in his creation standpoint from liberalism to social utilitarianism. Lao She objects to 'Writings are for conveying truth' and emphasizes the artistic quality in early times, but is for that literature is subject to the war of Resistance against Japan in the period of the association. The shift in Lao She's literature standpoint is firstly embodied in his choice of literary genres. Before the outbreak of the war, Lao She focuses on novel and writes poetic prose as well. While, in the period of the association, he tries his hand at writing different types of genres, particularly, such creations as popular literature and art and drama, because works of this two types are easy to understand and more suitable to propagate the war of Resistance against Japan than others. When Lao She creates works of popular literature and art and others, he, in one aspect, assumes the responsibilities for the nation and the people; in the other aspect, he is forced to give up temporarily his favorite subjects and genres. Works of popular literature and art and others written in the period of the association are of propagation, education and literature history.Secondly, Lao She's creation in the period of the association sheds light on propagation on the whole, demonstrating strong national consciousness and outstanding conception of state as well as social utilitarianism for the seek of national salvation.Thirdly, although Lao She in the period of the association changes his standpoint from free aesthetics to utilitarianism, he manages to reconcile aesthetics and utility in his creation, and also, to go back to individual narration so as to develop a producing genre of his own, which is very obvious in his work Four Generations Under the Same Eaves.Lastly, many a Lao She's work in the period of the association continue the criticism on national characteristics and reflection on Chinese traditional culture in early stages.Lao She's works in the period of the association promote and develop patriotism and obtain certain achievements. Due to more focus on propagation, the artistic quality in his works is damaged to some degree.
