This article has reviewed the developments of Chinese TV documentaries. It analysed and summarized some involved information , investigations, the similarities and differences between Chinese and other countries' documentaries. It also generalized the status quo of Chinese documentaries. They have being full of subjective and inspiring idea but being lack of marketing and media consciousness. So comparing with other various TV programs, they often neglected by the audience. In people's eyes, most of them are homiletic, fusty and slick. The creators of them have no enough understanding of the audience's demands, but unilaterally emphasize their idea of creating. Thereupon the number of the audience has reduced, the audience rating is generally low. Chinese documentaries are facing embarrassed living conditions.How can Chinese TV documentaries get rid of these puzzledoms? The key for the question not only lies on discussing the creating idea, but also understanding how to satisfy the audience. It's the most important. At present, most of the research work for documentaries aims to the question of creating ideas. But how to innovate the ideas? It doesn't rely on creators' subjective desire but according to the demands of the audience.
