The essence of human beings is an unsolved sphinx riddle haunting the thinkers and philosophers throughout the history of mankind. Based on the new practice and the scientific understanding of new practice, Marx and Engels founded the theory of Marxism, and established the comprehension of human essence from the perspective of Marxism. The pursuit of the essence of human beings in history is an evolutionary process, from ancient Greek and Roman questionings up to modern theories of human essence which is a historical record of human self-cognition by western thinkers. Although these answers can justify themselves, most comprehensions of human essence are abstract and partial. On the basis of materialism, Marx's"the essence of human beings"makes a historic reform of the theory of human essence, setting up scientific cognition of human essence.Marx's viewpoint on the essence of human beings is significant not only in theory, but also in reality, for it provides a theoretical support for human development in the socialist market economy with the background of globalization. Furthermore, it helps to smooth away the negative effects imposed on people by socialist market economy, holding fast to human-oriented principles, and promoting all-round development of people.
