Kuo Mo-jo Speech Of The Republican Period And Speeches Creative Study

Guo Moruo was well known as a Chinese national litterateur, historian, philologist, social activist and extremely skilled orator as well. During his whole life, even if when he was exiled overseas, he had never stopped delivering speeches which covered literature, arts, politics, diplomacy, society, culture, academic research and other domains. Large numbers of speeches, elegant, thoughtful and tremendously valuable in academic research, were left behind. As one of his important social activities speech embodied his active involvement in society and the times. Readers can feel from his speeches, a peculiar form of his literary creation, his then thoughts and the development of his thoughts. Accordingly the research on his speech will further the research on his whole works and modern Chinese speech as well. However, it is pitiful that nothing has been done to deepen the research and compilation of his speeches up to now. None of the academic papers focused on the research of his speeches has been published, and even none of the dissertation papers of master's degrees has even touched this domain. Therefore, the author attempts in this paper to systematically summarize his activities and speeches during the Republic of China(1912---1949) and provide some references for the research of Guo Moruo by regarding his speech as a given literary style for analysis and comments. And the author sincerely hopes his modest understanding will be of any assistance with providing some illuminative insights to broaden the research on Guo Moruo. The paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly combs and summarizes the speech activities of Guo Moruo in chronological order. Taking the major events in his life as reference the author generally categorizes his speech activities into three phases: pre War of Resistance against Japan period; in War of Resistance against Japan period and before the founding of People's Republic of China. Introduction and comment on his speech activities in each phase has been made.The second chapter deals with the analysis on his thoughts via speeches. As an important media of participation in social activities speeches manifest his meditation on some questions and serve as an important expression of his thoughts. The paper combs, analyzes and summarizes, in three aspects namely literary arts, society and politics, culture and academy, his speeches so as to seek his thoughts and follow the development of the times.The third chapter is focused on the analysis and exploration of the artistic characteristic of his speeches. On the basis of analyzing the diction of his speeches the paper deals with the analysis of the artistic characteristic of his literary creation. First, adopt passionate style, which is an outstanding feature of his speeches and he owed his achievements to it. Second, utilize humorous language. In his speeches numerous rhetoric techniques like metaphor and contrast are widely employed, which make his diction vivid, elaborate and humorous. Third, explain the profound in simple terms. Readers are completely engrossed in the artistic conception created by his speech, just like putting themselves in his position, so as to have hear-to-heart communication with him.
