Development Of A Character Table For Assessing Chinese Character Recognition Of Foreign Students

Word lists play a significant role in assessing vocabulary size. Aspecial character table requires be developed to determine the size ofChinese characters recognized by foreign students quickly andaccurately. This dissertation aims to develop a character table inaccordance with laws of recognizing characters by means of analyzingsubjective and objective influencing factors and relevant data obtainedfrom literature reading, questionnaire, corpus investigation andexperimental test of character recognition.On basis of reviewing the available character tables, a paradigm ofdeveloping character tables has been summarized by integrating thedevelopment process of several scattered tables, and a flow chart hasbeen sketched out with every link of developing tables labeled.Under the guidance of the paradigm, this paper elaborates eachlink including character choosing, labeling, sorting and classifying withthe similar research step. First, existing research results were analyzed comparatively，then specific development scheme was put forward andput into practice, eventually the character table with rich informationfor assessing foreign students was developed.A system for characters retrieval, one of several functions of thecharacter table, was designed and realized to facilitate the retrieval oftest characters according to needs. The character table also providesimportant data support for the coming computer test of the size ofChinese characters recognized by foreign students.
