Under market economy condition, the development function and level determine the survival and further development of an enterprise. The development function is determined by internal capability of an enterprise, but it reflect externally as competitive strength, especially the sense of long term. Therefore, the development function, or the internal capability, must be in the first place in order to keep the enterprise development on going. In fact, the answer to the problem of the state-owned enterprise in China is to foster and perfect the development function of them. To this point, we consider that we can get not only the theoretically instructive results, but also the practical guiding lines if we make in depth discussion on the capability of enterprise development and the ways to foster them. Beginning with the problem 揑s the enterprise sustainable development? ? this paper clears up the confusion and makes up the differences on the problem of enterprise sustainable development by theoretical reasoning and logic demonstrating. Based on this, we discussed the relationship between competitive strength and enterprise development, the core competence and the long competitive strength, the core competence and the operating fields, the strategy to foster core competence and the relationship between the enterprise core competence fostering and the lifecycle of enterprise, and moreover the fostering strategy of core competence for the latercomers and get to the basic conclusions. In the last part of this paper, we discuss the problem of China chain run of pharmaceutical retail enterprise抯 core competence. In general, the conclusions of this paper can be summed up as follows: Ii] The development of enterprise is sustainable. Whether the enterprise can realize it抯 sustainable development has nothing to do with the time of life, but is 2 determined by the person in the company. 12] The market condition of enterprise sustainable development is based on the relative competitive strength, thereinto, the core competence is the basic of competitive strength, it is the headspring of long competitive strength. Besides, the core competence determines the depth and the diversification of a company operating fields. [3] Strategy based on the internal management and that on external exchange and their interaction is the essential ways to foster the core competence. The internal strategy is propitious to enterprise to foster, adjust and consolidate its core competence, the external strategy, on the other hand, is advantageous for widening and updating the core competence. The interaction of these two strategies can consolidate, widen and upgrade the core competence, thereby promoting the enterprise develop sustainably. [4] The competence strength of name brand is the core competence of a chain run of pharmaceutical retail company. The internal and the external strategy are the basic ways to foster the competence strength of name brand.
