The tendency of globalization becomes stronger along with the coming of the 21st century. Globalization has formed a new economic structure in which MNCs are playing the most important role. Under such a situation multinational cooperation will be the inevitable choice for Chinese enterprises to exist and develop in world economy. However, in contrast with the companies that are listed in world's top 500, Chinese enterprises are confronted with the disadvantages of small scale, backward management and quite limited investment on R&D. Core competence (CC) is the key point for Chinese enterprises not to defeated by those famous MNCs and finally win the advantage. Based on the analysis of basic theories of FDI and CC, this paper arouse some reasonable suggestions on how to strive for long-term competitive advantage in multinational cooperation, from which hoping that Chinese enterprises will benefit.Multinational cooperation is a form of FDI. Traditionally economists introduce theories of FDI to explain why MNCs could be in existence, and Eclectic Theory of International Production (ETIP) is regarded as the most general one for its high integration. But after the specific advantages of ownership and internalization, the function of CC is ignored. CC belongs to the scope of management, which has marvelous effect in helping companies gain long-term competitive advantages. This concept has a long history but the relative research is still a new topic. Concerning its content, there are disputes between capability-orientation and resource-orientation. Actually the theory of ETIP and the theory of CC have a joint point in the practice of multinational cooperation. In the three-specific-advantage model, location choice is available for all companies, whereas ownership and internalization are the unique features, which can represent the nature of their CC. Based on defining the content of CC clearly and analyzing the logic between FDI and CC deeply, the author tries to penetrate into the understanding of ETIP from the CC angle and explain the function of CC in multinational cooperation, so as to provide feasible instructions for Chinese enterprises. The first chapter analyzed the necessity of cooperating internationally and described the status of Chinese MNCs. It is the shortage of CC that leads to theinferiority of Chinese enterprises in international competition. Cultivating mature CC in the multinational cooperation is very important at this stage. The second chapter looked back at the development of theories of CC. After analyzing disputes on the content of CC detailedly, this paper presented a specific definition on its connotation, upon which the author carried out research on the consisting factors such as natural endowments, organic ability, systemic ability, learning ability, innovative ability, etc.In the third chapter, this paper focused on the logic between ETIP and CC in multinational cooperation. There are relevant relationships with reference to CC vs. ownership and internalization. Substituting CC for ownership and internalization, the matrix of CC and location can instruct multinational cooperation better. The forth chapter went along with the empirical research on CC of Chinese enterprises by referring to the econometrical model designed by Wangyi and drew a conclusion: Chinese companies have stepped into the competition of strategic CC and organic CC. In the long-term multinational cooperation, we are facing the competition of technological CC. Meanwhile, this chapter introduced a method of evaluating a company's CC.The last chapter arose several feasible ideas on the enhancement of CC. including the development and usage of resources, the establishment of learning organization, the innovation of technology, value, organization and management. Finally there was a case study on the success and failure of Haier Group for Chinese MNCs to gain enlightenments. The characteristics of this paper's research method are as follows: firstly, criterion research is combined with empirical rese...
