Core competences are the source of achieving competitive strengths for today's enterprises. Enterprises' existence and sustained development largely depends on their own core competences that achieved in the course of their daily operations. The theory of core competence has now become the main and widely used method of solving enterprises'underlying problems since it was first introduced by the two famous American scholars-C. k. Prahalad and Gary Hamel. At present, China's state-owned enterprise (SOE) reform is at its key stage. It's a central and urgent task to build enough competitive large-sized SOEs in China. The fundamental goal of SOEs reform is to make the enterprises highly competitive on the market. However, short of core competence is the most serious problem in today's Chinese enterprises, so the works of cultivating and improving state-owned enterprises' core competence become the key and pressing task at present. In the paper, combined the theory of core competence with the practice of the reform and development of Chinese large-sized SOEs, the writer discusses the subject of sharpening the SOEs'core competences. As a necessary basis, the development course of the theory, the typical concepts of core competence and its main characters, component factors, the generally used detection and management methods are discussed in detail. Then, the paper raises the proposal that the theory of core competence could be used to solve the SOEs'difficult problems and to strengthen large-sized SOEs'comprehensive competences. Based on this thinking, the author approaches this subject from different fields, for example, establish a modern corporate system, accelerate the pace of technical transformation, remove structure-inherent obstacles, cultivate a good organization culture, introduce a new incentive mechanism, enhance their technical and institutional renovation capabilities in order to consolidate what has been gained in the reform. In addition, the paper provides Qianjin group's reform practice as a case to support the whole discussion.
