After September 11, the international situation has become complicated and the Central Asia area has been turned into a hotspot. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the characters and trends of Russian's geopolitical strategy towards Central Asia after September 11. The author tries to put forward corresponding measures in the interest of China, providing a new perspective for the establishment of China's future developing compendium and foreign policy towards Central Asia.This dissertation is organized as follows:First, it describes the new backgrounds of the Russia's geopolitical strategy towards Central Asia after September 11. These new backgrounds mainly include: America's military presence in Central Asia in the name of anti-terrorism, the EU and the NATO's both eastern expansion, the Islamic countries' competing influences upon this area, the further utilitarian cooperation between China and Central Asia, and the interest-based behaviors of the nations in Central Asia.Secondly, it analyzes the content of Russian's geopolitical strategy towards Central Asia after September 11.Russia stimulates Chechnya's further solution on behalf of permitting American army's exist in Central Asia; Russia struggles to build a geopolitical strategic structure based on economic and military strengths; Russia strives to coordinate its relations with Islamic countries in order to enhance its advantages; Russia attempts to unite with China to resist jointly pressures from the USA.Thirdly, it evaluates the performance of the Russia's geopolitical strategy towards Central Asia after September 11. In the short term, Russia succeeds in resisting America's eroding effects on Central Asia, maintaining its current geopolitical benefits, and providing a favorable international environment for Russia's further domestic economic reforms and Chechnya's establishment as an independent nation. Meantime, it can contribute to the re-election of Putin as President. In the long term, Russia's adjustment of its geopolitical strategy towards Central Asia after September 11 will exert great influences upon its pursuit of vital status in the regional structure of Eurasia. The paper also analyzes the factors constraining Russia's geopolitical strategy towards Central Asia and predicts three possible scenarios of it: the emergence of antagonism, maintaining of the status quo, and turning to withdrawing.At last, it discusses the impact of Russia's geopolitical strategy towards Central Asia on China and what actions China should take.
