Suburbanization is a process in which population, jobs and service industries in big cities move from inside to outside. As a stage of suburbanization, population suburbanization is correspondingly a process of population moving from centers of big cities to suburbs, which is marked by the relative or absolute decrease of the population in centers and the apparent increase of population in suburbs. Based on other scholars' academic achievements, this thesis makes a systematic study and a positive analysis on basic conception, phenomenon, mechanism and regional effect of population suburbanization etc, and then summarizes preliminarily the geographic process of population suburbanization in theory by applying theories and methods in relevant subjects, such as urban geography, regional economic geography and sociology, with phenomenon of population suburbanization and its spatio-temporal changes through the whole thesis and with Beijing City as a instance. This paper can be divided into three parts: The first part is theoretical understandings on suburbanization and its geographic process. This part expounds the conception and theory of suburb, suburbanization, population suburbanization and geographic process, and in the meanwhile makes a brief introduction on the status of suburbanization research at home and abroad.By comparing data in the fourth national census with data in the fifth national census, the second part analyzes the spatio-temporal changes of Beijing population since 1990s. The analysis includes the distribution of total population, permanent and temporary residents within municipal territory, urban peripheries as well as all districts and counties of Beijing. And the latest changing trend of the above-mentioned distribution is also included in the analysis. The third part makes a further study on the suburbanization phenomenon of Beijing population in terms of character, pattern, mechanism, regional effects of population suburbanization. The fourth part summarizes geographic process of population suburbanization. Firstly, this part expounds the basic theories and new trends of suburbanization in China and abroad. Secondly, it analyzes the geographic expression, motive mechanism, spatio-temporal process and regional effects of population suburbanization. Finally, the fourth part makes a theoretical summarization on development tendencies, development forms of population suburbanization.
