In China the theoretical research on Urban Management relatively lags behind the requirements of reality, there is an urgent demand to analyze and summarize the urban management practices in a theoretical way so as to improve the urban management system and provide the theoretical basis for future urban management practice.On the basis of the present theoretical achievements, the thesis starts with a detailed study of the categorical connotations of urban management and proceeds to construct a new system of urban management, in the end of the thesis are case studies of the five prevailing patterns of Chinese urban management.Chapter one A summary on urban managementThis chapter is focused on the analysis of the connotations of urban management and aims at throwing light on the relations among urban competitive advantages, urban governance and urban management; forthwith five urban management principles are proposed and illustrated.Chapter two The theoretical basis of urban managementThe theoretical basis of urban management is tackled in the chapter from economical, sociological, managing and planning point of view and the relevant theories adopted to analyze the problems at hand are urban rent theory, urban competitive theory, enterprise management theory, new public management theory and the sustainable development theory.Chapter three The construction of a new system of urban managementWith the development of technology and science, urban modernization is on the fast traffic lane. The connotations of urban management is becoming multiple dimensional. This chapter makes a systematic study of the contents of urban management from sociological and economical field. The contents of urban management is made up of five subsystems covering tangible productive factors, intangible productive factors, urban trademarks, social and spiritual civilization. Chapter four Case studies of the prevailing urban management patterns After a thorough analysis of the practices of urban management in china, the author finds out five prevailing patterns of urban management: environment-oriented pattern, enterprise-oriented pattern, silicon valley pattern of China, new urbanization-oriented pattern and "hi-tech" zone pattern. Each of the patterns is clarified from three aspects: the connotation, the applying prerequisites and the management stresses; the author demonstrates her point by case studies respectively.
