With civil servants at the basic level as the research objects, the thesis aims to study dimensions of their job characteristics, interrelationships between job characteristics, personality traits, job satisfaction and job performance, and make suggestions to the leaders at the basic level.First of all, the thesis clarifies the problem of the research and its significance, overviews previous related literature and then establishes the research framework. Stuck to the construct of the research, the thesis utilizes focus group interview, questionnaire survey and statistical analysis to study job characteristics of civil servants at the basic level and interrelationship between job characteristics and personality traits, job satisfaction and job performance. It is divided into two parts. For the first part, the thesis discusses the dimensions of job characteristics of civil servants at the basic level through semi-structured interview, questionnaire survey and data analysis; for the second part, it discusses interrelationships between job characteristics and personality traits, job satisfaction and job performance.The outcomes show that job characteristics include eight dimensions, which are job-study growth, job autonomy, job importance, work feedback, task clearness, skill complexity, job-social intercourse and task integrality. Among them, dimensions of job characteristics are positively correlated with job satisfaction and job performance; personality traits (achievement needs, locus of control, self-efficacy) of civil servants at basic level interact with job characteristics, and casts remarkable effects on job satisfaction and job performance.In the conclusion the thesis points out the significance of the research and makes suggestion to leaders at the basic level. After that it points out the limitations of the research honestly and depicts prospects of the succeeding study.It is hoped that the thesis will be of use in following aspects: improving the level of human resource management in government departments; increasing job satisfaction of civil servants at the basic level; increasing attractiveness of governmentto the talents; improving the job performance of civil servants at the basic level thus to increase ruling level of government; and also perfecting the job characteristic theory.
