With China’s comprehensive and deepening reform currently, people pay more andmore attention on government’s macro-control capacity of the economy and society. Civilservants are the makers and implementers of government policies and measures, so theircontextual performance has an essential role on the overall performance level ofgovernment. By finishing the study of literature, we find that job satisfaction and jobcharacteristics have a major impact on the performance of civil servants. But the empiricalstudy of relationships between the three factors is still lacking.Firstly, this article elaborates the theories of contextual performance, jobcharacteristics and job satisfaction. And it also analyses the influence of five dimensionsof job characteristics on job satisfaction and civil servants’ contextual performance as wellas the influence of job satisfaction on civil servants’ contextual performance. Through theabove research, this article builds a theoretical model.Secondly, this article makes an empirical analysis on the theoretical models accordingto the collected data from the questionnaires. By using SPSS18to make descriptivestatistical analysis, reliability analysis and validity analysis of the276valid questionnaires,and using AMOS18to test the research hypotheses, it obtains the results that tasksignificance, task autonomy and task feedback affects civil servants’ contextualperformance significantly; job satisfaction affects civil servants’ contextual performancesignificantly; skill variety, task autonomy and task feedback affects job satisfactionsignificantly. This article also finds that job satisfaction has a mediating effect in theinfluence of task autonomy and task feedback on civil servants’ contextual.Finally, this article discusses the research findings and makes recommendationsaccordingly. The purpose of this article is to provide theoretical guidance for theimprovement of civil servants’ contextual performance. And then it will improve theoverall performance level of our government.
