The relationship between teachers and students is a special interpersonal relationship that is formed during the process of teaching and learning activities and communications between teachers and students. As a special form of the common educational system, the reformatory education (hereinafter referred to as"RE") targets juveniles who have bad habits and are not suitable in studying in the regular middle schools and thus, the relationship between teachers and students in RE has certain unique characteristics. Based on surveys and interviews with reference to research results on the relationship between teachers and students from home and abroad, this research which is the first specialized systemic research ever performed on the relationship between teachers and students in reformatory schools compiled"Questionnaire on the Current Status of Relationship between Teachers and Students in Reformatory Schools"and"Questionnaire on the Factors Affecting the Relationship between Teachers and Students"and conducted surveys and inquiries to 201 students in six reformatory schools in Shanghai. The research results of the said surveys and inquires on the current status of the relationship between teachers and students shows the followings:1,The relationship between teachers and students in reformatory schools is good but such a relationship as a whole is not in high level because the phenomenons of corporal punishment or disguised corporal punishment still exist. Thus, there is still large room for enhancing and improving the harmonization of the relationship between students and teachers. Teachers can respect and pay attention to most of the students in addition to adopting a positive educational method.2,Although the majority of students are eager to establish a harmonized relationship with their teachers, there is less than 30% students who choose to initiatively ease the conflict when problem occurs in the relationship between teachers and students. Students have lower level understanding to teachers. The trust that is placed on teachers by students is very worrisome because only 42% of students are willing to trust and speak to their teachers about their inner thoughts. Teachers are lack of the ability to democratically administrate students'affairs. The frequency of home visiting to students needs to be increased.3,The relationship between teachers and students is related to certain factors including gender, age, grade and length of enrollment of students but there is no significant difference. From the comparative researches on the relationship between teachers and students in downtown area schools and in suburban area schools, it shows that the average condition of relationship between teachers and students in the suburban area schools is better than those in the downtown area schools. The research result of"Questionnaire on Factors Affecting the Relationship between Teachers and Students"shows that the relationship between teachers and teachers in reformatory schools are consisting of seven major factors including optimum communication between teachers and students, administration, students, special character of individual student, character of individual teacher, teacher's criticism skills, and students'relationship handling ability. The optimum communication which contributes 14.24% of the entire factors is the main factor in affecting the relationship between teachers and students. Next to it are the factors of administration and student that contribute 10.34% and 14.24% respectively to the entire factors. This research also presents suggestions and countermeasures on improving the relationship between teachers and students in reformatory schools based on the said surveys interviews.
