| With the integrated use of qualitative and quantitive research methods, the researcher studied the print usage of role play circumstance in kindergarten, including the way of print usage(the features of word usage and the role of teachers and children in creating print environment), the reason and the results of print usage in the role play circumstance.The study finds, in the role play circumstance, printed names of play centers are the most. Most prints are presented with pictures. The print in the play circumstance accounts for a large proportion. Besides, most prints are displayed on the wall. These prints are either above or below the children’s eye level. What’s more, there are more non-standard fonts in the circumstance. The size,5centimeter*5centimeter, of the print is in the majority. Teachers mainly use bright color to decorate the print. In creating print environment, teachers play a large role. They search for materials, design and print these Chinese characters, as well as make these print materials. However, children mainly experience activities presented by the print, provide ideas and decorate these print.In the role play circumstance, teachers use written Chinese to make labels, take notes, and communicate with adults. They are not sure that these environmental print can promote children’s development of emergent literacy. Teachers neglect the role of play circumstance in promoting children’s development of emergent literacy. However, the study finds that children have a good comprehension on these types of print, including names of play centers, printed rules and print in role-choosing signs, in goods signs, in process signs and print in storage box. Background knowledge, experience, decorated with pictures and teacher’s guidance have active effects on children’s understanding of environmental print. However, adult experience in the usage of print and teachers’ replacement in creating print environment have the opposite effects.Based on these findings, the researcher makes some suggestions to better use the print in the role play circumstance. Firstly, teachers should highlight the role of play environmental print in promoting children’s emergent literacy. Secondly, they should consider children’s needs and existing experience, giving children a series of experience in emergent literacy when they provide print in the environment. Thirdly, teachers can provide some simple, functional words and use some words from life. Fourthly, teachers should concern and fulfill children’s willingnesses of using Chinese character. Besides, the features of children’s development must be considered. For example, these print should be at children’s eye level, decorated with pictures, in standard font forms and should involve children’s participation in creating the environment. What’s more, teachers can enrich children’s oral vocabulary in order to perceive these environmental print. |
