With the development of New Curriculum Concept in basic education schools,primary and secondary school education pay more attention to fostering students’overall quality. In the current situation of college entrance examination, senior onestudents are not divided into arts and science classes, nevertheless, the author’s schoolgives students the opportunity to choose their orientations of either arts or science,which results in differences in learning aims. Against this background, it’s impossiblefor the teacher to teach all these students in the same way and students’ learningefficiency is not very high. Small Class Teaching is a form of education and teachingbased on the reduced number of students under the guidance of advanced teachingconcepts. Small class hierarchical-level teaching is able to satisfy various needs ofboth arts and science students, and teachers can teach students in accordance withtheir aptitude to adapt to the development of each student and improve students’comprehensive qualities. By carrying out an experimental research on senior highgeography small class hierarchical-level teaching, this research tends to find ateaching strategy and mode contributing to the development of students with both artsand science orientations.The author consults, classifies and analyses documents on small classhierarchical-level teaching at home and abroad and bases this research on documentsrelated with senior high geography. Methods of questionnaire and interviewing areemployed in learning the situation of senior high geography teaching and studying inorder to find out the problems and analyze the reasons. By using experimentalverification method, the author supposes the mark of experimental class obviouslyhigher than the controlled class. The author carries out small class hierarchical-levelteaching in the experimental class instead of normal teaching in the controlled class.The experimental data are tested by Z value. The final result is that the mark ofexperimental class is obviously higher than that of the controlled class.Hence, a conclusion can be safely drawn that carrying out small class, arts andscience hierarchical-level teaching can encourage students to learn and promote individual teacher’s professional growth. Such a teaching mode can help students tobe goal oriented and improve their learning efficiency. As for students with arts orscience orientations, it can arouse their learning interest, make them study moreactively and improve their subject accomplishment in geography. All these reflect thebasis requirements of geography learning in senior high school according to the newcurriculum. This research, based on the practical geography teaching in senior highschool, is of great practical significance in education and teaching.
