Student assessment is the core of educational evaluation. It’s very significant in the field of educational practice. In terms of students, it plays the role of promoting students’learning and developing. In terms of teachers, it helps to know more about students’learning, and then adjust teaching strategy in order to achieve better teaching effect. In terms of the whole school, student assessment helps to guarantee the quality of teaching in a way.The nature of student assessment is to promote student’s learning progress and personal growth. However, with the development of utilitarianism and instrumentalism, student assessment now plays a screening and selecting role in students’learning activities, which makes me very worry.Based on this, the paper took the student assessment in "Six Big Modules" of general education of Fudan University for example, and designed a student questionnaire and a teacher questionnaire to learn about the current situation of student assessment in Fudan University. The author conducted a survey in curriculum objectives, teaching methods and assessment of student’s learning achievement, which is respectively in accordance with assessing objectives, assessing procedure and assessing outcomes of student assessment. The results of those questionnaires are as follows. First, the goal of student assessment is aimed at enabling students to master more knowledge and expand their horizons rather than improve their ability. Second, the main teaching methods of general curriculum are single, and students lack full interaction with their teacher in class at large, which leads to difficulty in conducting Formative Assessment, Multi-assessment and Qualitative assessment. Third, the assessment of student learning achievement is predominant by Summative Assessment and Quantitative Assessment, and the main form of assessing is final paper or final examination. The results of the survey reflect some problems. One, the assessment objectives are unreasonable in a way. Two, the contents of student assessment are narrow. Three, the outcomes of student assessment are of little significance in terms of promoting students’learning.In the same time, the paper learnt from some theories which are related with student assessment, such as Humanistic Theory, Constructivism Theory, Multiple Intelligence Theory, as well as the trend of modern student assessment methods, such as Formative Assessment, Qualitative Assessment, Multi-assessment and Development Assessment. In the end, through the analysis of the cause of those problems, the paper provide several suggestions in order to play the role of educating and promoting of student assessment in students’learning activities. Firstly, further refresh the concept of assessment, and makes the educational role of assessing outstanding. Secondly, conduct Multi-assessment, in order to promote student’s all-round development. Thirdly, pay attention to Formative Assessment and Qualitative Assessment. Last but not the least, we should give support to teachers’ practices of student assessment. All in all, teachers should give feedback timely and comprehensively to students in the process of students’learning, help students to effectively control the learning process, and promote their the all-round development. Student assessment should play the role of encouraging and promoting in students’ learning activities.
