Affected by Dalcroze’s first "Eurythmics" in the early twentieth century in the field of music education, a new kind of dance education different from the classical ballet which was the only dance education emphasizing technique at that time, was based on the understanding of nature and the analysis of body movement, the modern dance education focusing on the rhythm began boarded on the stage of history.Among all elements in dancing, like techniques and gestures, the rhythm is the most intimate part to human physiology and activity of psychological perception, and the essence of dance. With the development of rhythm movement teaching, people start to realize that the experiment and learning of body movement has to be carried out before the dance learning, thereby enhancing the body’s rhythmicity and coordination and building up the basis of dance learning and the cultivation of artistic sensibility and expression.In order to study the relationship between the teaching of rhythm and elementary education of dance, this paper first discusses the connotation of rhythm and its relation with the art of dancing, analyzing the relationship between the rhythm teaching and modern dance by reviewing the development history. Then, combining with practical examples, the paper elaborates three types of elementary education development in China and foreign countries: the traditional elementary education of dance starting with basic skills and limb development, the modern elementary education of dance focusing rhythm and taking students into the dancing word by rhythm, and improved elementary education of dance comparing to the traditional one.The third chapter demonstrates the value of rhythm teaching in elementary education of dance: 1. Rhythm teaching is the beginning factor of elementary education of dance as rhythm comes from natural instincts of human, the teaching captures rhythm-the dominant factor in dance itself, meanwhile showing its emotional superiority. 2.Rhythm teaching captures the key of elementary education of dance, it follows the nature of development in movement based on the acquaintance of elements in movement. 3. Ass the guarantee of elementary education of dance, the rhythm teaching helps with the body function of coordinating, and knowing the movement function of limbs. 4. Rhythm teaching is also the development factor of elementaryeducation of dance, which motivates the ability of imagination and turns on the button of movement thinking and cultivates creativity. In the end, the author proposes the idea of the rhythm of teaching, and gives specific referential plan for the practical elementary education of dance.The author thinks that we should value the research and construction of elementary education of dance, and fully recognize its value, which can not only help dancing learners enjoy dancing with joy and relaxation, grasp the most important factor of dancing- rhythm, obtain the key to vitality and expressiveness in dance and cultivate imagination and creativity, but also change our concept of dancing education,jump out of traditional ways, and breed great dancers in future.
