The promotion of the national policy also brought major changes to the family structure in China—the nucleus family with three members with the child as the core has become the mainstream. As the effects of the policy of family planning keep emerging, the social risks in the families of family planning also increase, which generated a special group—parents who lost their only child. The loss of the only child would undoubtedly take disastrous blow on those families which have to not only bear the bereavement but also burden the pressures from making a living when they are aged, society and mind. The country and society have given support and concern to the increasing number of the “parents losing the only child” in form of material and policy. However, there is still the lack of effective ways to help them out of the spiritual predicament which exerts great influence on those families. Based on the analysis of Survey Report of the Families Losing their Only Child in Xicheng District of Beijing, the material and spiritual difficulties confronted by the families will be summarized. To support the families, relevant policies were issued by Beijing and Xicheng District government about the subsidies for the families. However, as a whole, the group of people is still mired in helplessness because it is hard to satisfy their appeals. They have to unite the people of the like to obtain the spiritual comfort. What is worth emphasizing, the demand of the families losing the only child are diversified and more about mentality which cannot be met by the government alone. The lack of the effective and professional approaches is regarded as the main reason to bring many of the families into the spiritual crisis.The involvement of the professional social work into the “families losing the only child” is of great significance theoretically, practically and profoundly. Therefore, the essay aims to make an analysis of the internal demand and difficulties of the families losing the only child, particularly the spiritual demand they concern most based on the reality reflected from Survey Report of the Families Losing their Only Child in Xicheng District of Beijing. The author will highlight the ways to apply the professional social work skills and the three major methods such as social individual cases, group work and community work with their demands as the entry point, joint point and breakthrough point to discuss about the strategies of the involvement of the professional social work into those families and about the ways to encourage the families to rebuild the confidence and get rid of the dilemma from the theoretical and practical angle by means of resource excavation and spiritual remodeling.
