A Study On The Construction Of Campus Culture In The New Campus Of Colleges And Universities

A university is a societal franchise that takes the role of inheriting well-established traditions and developing innovative cultures. Its societal and cultural influence is of essential significance in strengthening a high quality education for college students, enhancing their all-around development. After years of efforts, each university has its own unique cultural symbolisms:some nurturing students in ways tangible or intangible, others transforming the society with the advanced thoughts and theory innovation. Since the expansion of university enrollment in1998, the number of college students in China increases rapidly. To accommodate this change of pace, many well-known universities broke ground for new campuses in addition to their original campus. From one point of view, new campuses have help meet the demand of the sheer number of students after the enrollment expansion, though at the expense of large investment, vast amount of construction sites, facilities, and advanced equipments. However from a different angle, challenges were also created due to a lack of historical heritage and recent accomplishments for the new campus, a cultural fault line between the old and new campuses. This not only makes it difficult for the university to function as a cradle for intellectuals and affect the development of the students, but also impedes the prospering of new campuses in itself.As most previous works related to new campus culture are too much focused on the inheritance and development of the old traditions, but pays little attention to the cultural development for the new campus. This work will explore some concepts and theories on the developing of college campus culture through detailed analysis on the importance of factors such as materialism, spiritualism, institutional structure and behavioral aspects in the build-up of a campus culture. We will describe in a systemic fashion the structure and function of the new campus culture development. The study will specifically focus on the cultural construction in new campuses in colleges and universities near the Chengdu area. Questionnaire surveys and field research will be carried out, delve deep into the existing problems in the construction of new campus culture. We will zoom into the localized conditions in the cultural front of new campuses and look through to the big picture of current circumstances in campus cultures.. Finally, we shall put forward the principles, suggestions and precautionary measures for the growth of the new campus cultures and provide new understandings for the inheritance and innovation of campus culture in the future. During the construction of campus culture, the key is to thoroughly implement the ideas in the eighteenth party conference and in the Third Plenary Session of the eighteenth Central Committee of the Communist Party Chinese Third Plenary Session, that is,.the construction of socialist culture, enhance China’s cultural soft power, adhere to the direction of socialist advanced culture, stick to the development of the road of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics, adhere to the people-centered job orientation, further deepen the reform of the cultural system. Let the new generation of college students undertake the historical responsibility of "China dream", and strive to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.This paper is divided into five parts for the current status of the construction of campus culture:the introduction; new campus and campus culture; the new campus culture development-taking colleges in Chengdu area as an example; strengthening countermeasures for the construction of new campus cultures; and conclusions.
