Recent years, school for mentally retarded has expanded the types of students, including the mentally retarded, students with autism, students with cerebral palsy, students with learning disabilities and students with various emotional problems. With the increase of students, a growing surge of problem behaviors can be found at school for mentally retarded. Problem behaviors refer to inefficient behaviors or the behaviors affecting oneself and others’ normal study and life. Taking a school for mentally retarded in Dalian as an example, this study conducts systematic research and analysis on students’ problems. Moreover, the representative individual cases have been selected to study and different behaviors. On this basis, functional behavior assessment is conducted to study the reasons behind the behaviors. This study aims to offer effective references for education and management of problem behaviors for the teachers in school for mentally retarded and the special children’s parents.Through reviewing relevant domestic and foreign literatures, this paper classifies the problems into seven types with the study purpose. Additionally, three self-compiled Students’ Problem Behaviors Scale in School for Mentally Retarded, Problem Behaviors Cases Observation Record and Problem Behaviors Functional Behavior Assessment have been finished. This paper studies problem behaviors in school of mentally retarded from the overall school situation, different problem behaviors’ characteristics in different grades, different actions among different types of students as well as different problem behavior functions.Study Conclusions:1. Disrupting and disturbing the class behaviors, attention deficit and hyperactivity behaviors appear more frequently in school for mentally retarded, and the latter two behaviors are more serious.;2. The frequency and effect of the following behaviors will slow down with grade increasing;3. The mentally retarded students mainly present attention deficit, hyperactivity behaviors and class disturbing, while the students with autism mainly show stereotyped behaviors and self-injurious behaviors;4. The individual cases problem behaviors intend to acquire real substance, avoid simulation and disgust and arouse others’ attention to feel cool.Suggestions:1. To pay attention to correcting the problem behaviors with high frequency and many students;2. To conduct multi-dimension functional behavior assessment and provide some behavior intervention based on the functions.
