The teaching of writing has always been the difficulty among the teaching of Junior High Chinese. Teachers and students make great efforts but can’t get good effects. The improvement of writing requires not only teachers’ delicate directions but also students’ abundant practice. Chinese Curriculum Standard of Compulsory Education (2011 Edition) has given its specific requirement on the quantity of writing: no less than 14 compositions per year, no less than 10,000 words of other forms of practice per year and the ability to finish a composition no less than 500 words in 45 minutes. However, CCSCE (2011) has not given clear suggestions on the specific forms of "other forms of practice" while essay turns out to be a good choice. This paper, on the basis of educational practice, interprets and analyzes the problems showed in the practice of essay in Junior High. Combining correspondent strategies provided by constructivism, non-directive teaching of writing and other relevant theories, this paper aims at providing practical strategies in the training of essay writing to improve students’ writing ability.Taking the practice of teaching as the starting point, students’ essays are collected and sorted out, questionnaire is completed, interviews are carried out, and study on students’ writing is conducted, during the process of which, a review and analysis on former researches is also carried out.Basic strategies of practicing Chinese essay in Junior High are put forward after the study. First is the strategy of stimulating students’ interests in the writing of essay. Efforts should be made to create an atmosphere of being willing to write essays. The shining points in students’essays should be discovered. Students’ interests in writing should be stimulated. Second is the strategy of accumulating source material in the training of writing essays. Teachers should guide the students to come closer to their lives and observe their lives with attention. Persisting in reading daily, listening attentively and thinking deeply, students accumulate the bits and pieces of everyday life so as to enrich their writing materials and to provide source and inspiration for their writing. Third is the strategy of developing good habit in the practice of essay. Ye Shengtao regards the developing of good habits as the practice of basic skills, which is of equal importance to the development of ability. He insists that the formation of ability relies on the cultivation of habits, which clearly shows the importance of developing good writing habits. The cultivation of good writing habits is of great benefit for the improvement of students’writing ability. Fourth is the strategy of evaluation in Junior High’s essay practice. Students are of different writing abilities. It is against objective laws to measure all the writing with the same standard in everyday practice. As a result, based on the overall practice objectives and basic writing requirement, different standards and various forms of evaluating can be taken according to the difference in students’ writing abilities.
