A Study On The Relationship Between Bullying Behavior And Self - Concept In Senior High School Students

This study concerns about the common phenomenon of bullying in elementary schoolyards. The purpose is to investigate the phenomenon and characteristics of bullying among higher grades children in elementary school and understand the development of self-concept, and know the relationship between bullying behavior and self-concept by test the difference of self-concept between who involved or not involved in the bullying.This study selected more than six hundred senior students in three elementary schools in Yunnan province and used the Olweus elementary school bully questionnaire and Piers- Harris children’s self-concept scale as a research tool to investigate the basic characteristics of the bully behavior and self-concept and do statistical analysis by SPSS 13.0.This paper mainly introduces the differences of self-concept and its each dimension(behavior, intelligence and school situation, the body appearance and properties, anxiety, sociable, happiness and satisfaction) among students who involved or not involved in the bullying, in order to research children’s bullying behavior and self-concept and their relationship.The results showed that:(1)The incidence of campus bullying phenomenon is higher among the elementary school higher grades students. There are 8.6% of the students are bully and 3.3% of the students are victim and 1.9% of the students are bully/victim and 86.3% of the students have not involved in the bullying phenomenon.(2) In the elementary school higher grades, direct verbal bullying accounted for the most proportion, followed is indirect bullying, less is the direct physical bullying. The incidence of these three types of bullying are 50.00%, 42.12% and 50.00% respectively.(3)The higher grades within the bullying phenomenon are no significant in gender, grade, and whether the one-child differences. The fifth grade students compared to the sixth grade students hold a more positive attitude toward bullying problems.(4) The general characteristics of the elementary school higher grades campus bullying phenomenon is: bullying phenomenon is given priority between the classmate and more performance is a male student as a bully.(5) In the elementary school, higher grades students’ behavior dimension scores is highest, happiness and satisfaction dimension scores is lowest.(6) In the gender differences of the self-concept of anxiety and the total score, the boys is significantly higher than girls, and physical appearance and attribute dimensions boys was significantly lower than girls. In the grade difference, the fifth grade students self-concept of anxiety dimension and total score were significantly higher than sixth grade. In terms of only to compare with the one child policy, the one-child were significantly lower than not only children in anxiety and social dimensions scores.(7) There exists differences between different bullying identity of self-concept score, by bullies bully/total score of self-concept is significantly higher than other bullies, bully and students who are not involved in. The score on the dimension of behavior, who do not enkindles the bullies and is significantly higher than the bully. In intelligence and score on the dimension of the school situation, bullying/the bully students is significantly higher than other three kinds of identity, the bully who enkindles, significantly higher significantly below not bully who enkindles. In the social dimension, students who bullies bully or not enkindles is significantly higher and the bully. In happiness and meet the dimension and the total score of self-concept, bullying/the bully students score is significantly higher than other three kinds of identity. All kinds of bullying identity of the children body appearance with different attribute dimension and anxiety dimension score there is no statistical differences. In general, students who have relatively higher self-concept do not tend to get involved in bullying.This study explores the relationship between self-concept and bullying phenomenon of elementary school higher grades students in order to understand the elementary school campus bullying and self-concept and predict the students’ bad behavior. This paper provides new theoretical reference for students’ good character and support for education teaching work.
