Cognition refers to psychological activities of the individual awareness and understanding, including from simple to be sure of oneself and the environment, perception, attention to the complex, such as learning and memory, thinking and language, etc. The paper uses 2013-2014 school year China Education Panel Survey(CEPS)-the education track baseline data, and according to the cognitive ability variable of grade 7 and 9,between two different grades, study between two grades and respectively differences in demographic variables and variables of parenting and their relationship. Results show that: first, the two grades have differences in distribution. Second, on the sex, cognitive ability of the girl in the grade 7 is superior to the boy’s, but they are in the same level for the grade 9. Third, in the region, from the countryside to the city center and the transition area, average cognitive ability levels from low to high. Finally, in parents’ behaviors and relationships, fathers often drunk and parents often quarrel has more or less negative influence on the students in different grades; parents’ relationship has no obvious effect; living with parents will also have a significant impact on students’ cognitive, living together with a better cognitive performance. In order to study the specific factors that influence cognitive ability, the paper choose important variables by using the theory, correlations and regressions of the variables, using factor analysis and factor regression method to study the effects of different factors on different grades. In the end, using path analysis to get the relationships of parents’ education, family wealth, attitudes of learning, cognitive ability and academic achievement, found that father’s education plays an important role on students’ cognitive ability, cognitive ability is the key to a student’s academic performance, and combined with the above conclusions put forward reasonable suggestions on the development of junior high school students’ cognitive ability.
