There are few art teachers paying attention to the procedure of students’ artistic creation or the methodology of inspiring students to be self-directed learners. When they are talking about their achievements in the domain of art education, they are used to displaying the works of the students. However, the education reform requires both teachers and students to change the ways of teaching and learning. In this way, people now concentrate more on students’ learning process and the life-time of influence which the acquisition of learning strategies has produced on students. Moreover, constructivism suggests that knowledge comes from students’ practice in activities as well as the changing surroundings. In this article, I would like to provide art teachers some useful information by studying how a worksheet functions in terms of guiding primary grades children to be self- directed learners when they are drawing and writing picture books. By analyzing students’ characteristics and teaching materials and designing appropriate worksheets while planning the lesson, I will improve students’ learning motivation in the activities like Picture book appreciation and copying, Picture book analysis and Picture book show, etc. Following the guidelines in the worksheets, students will be able to do self-assessment, set goals, make plans, search for information and ask for help, all of which will be acquired by students as learning strategies so that they will regulate their learning process and draw and write their own picture books at the end of the class. Worksheets will be used through the whole class. At the end of the thesis, I will reveal the limitations and give reflections on picture book lessons.
